Ready to Scrum?

18 maggio 2009

Scrum methodology looks like a smart way to fasten productivity.
It can work in conjunction with other "light" methodologies, i.e. Extreme Programming.
A quick-and-dirty description for both could be: Scrum deals with the Project Management, XP (Extreme Programming) with the software coding style.

Allegedly Scrum would boost performance up to 2, 3 times or more. Possible initial failures must be taken into account. Learning from these failures is anyway an important part of the practise.

Scrum is a radical change in the way people work and interact.

The critical aspect of all of this is that no compromise is allowed if you plan to adopt Scrum methodology. You must accept its rules as a whole. No way to start a Scrum team by partially adopting its rules. (see "Scrum Shock Therapy" at http://jeffsutherland.com/scrum/2008/09/shock-therapy-bootstrapping.html)

It seems that one of the most common causes of failure is a lack of adequate support at the management level. Some unsuccessful stories tell that even if the Scrum team was well up-and-running, they missed their goal because management took no interest. A continuous monitoring and checking of the team by the Scrum Master
is a critical aspect to reach the goal in a Sprint.

An interesting and funny point of Scrum is the inherent change in the classical roles inside a company. Managers will receive less power as more attention and responsibility is assigned to the team. A sort of flattening of the roles. Besides the Master and the Product Owner all the participants are equal, that is they create a Scrum which works to achieve the target of the current Sprint.
You don't have fixed roles, instead each of your Scrum team player has his/her own different skills. Moreover teams are self-organizing.

Sounds like attempting to break the consolidated personnel hierarchies

inside firms. Career-oriented people shouldn't be that happy to see their life principles swept away.
Large companies would easily benefit a chance to quickly rearrange their internal structures into a more dynamic and efficient model.

Are you ready?
